Equality
MGTS has a strong and long-standing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. Also, we promote a positive environment which celebrates everybody’s differences. The culture we have created at MGTS challenges prejudice and ensure fairness for all our apprentices. We are continually working towards achieving a training environment which challenges any form of discrimination. We aim to make you feel assured that you are part of an organisation that promotes equality for all.
During your training with MGTS, you will develop your understanding of the ‘Equality Act 2010’ and how it protects you during your training years and future employment. At MGTS we ensure that you are not treated differently or less favourably on the basis of the specific characteristics which are protected by the Equality Act. These are: age, race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment and marriage or civil partnership.
As one of our learners, you will attend an Equality & Diversity training session. The aim of the session is to raise your awareness and ensure that you know what you can expect from MGTS, by identifying what is expected of you as an apprentice. We aim to develop your confidence in expressing your views and develop the skills required to challenge and address any negative behaviour such as bullying, abuse, harassment or discrimination. It is very important that you can differentiate between the different types of discrimination and know what to do if you experience it in any form.
Prevent Duty
You will be aware about the terror attacks that have happened globally and within the UK over recent years. There has also been a significant increase in the number of young people being drawn into extreme right-wing groups. The ‘Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015’ introduced the ‘Prevent Duty’ as an attempt to prevent young people or vulnerable adults from becoming radicalised. Radicalisation means supporting terrorism and the extremist ideologies associated with terrorist groups.
It only takes a moment to make a report online. Every year thousands of reports from the public help the police keep communities safe from terrorism.
ACT Early | Prevent radicalisation
MGTS has a duty to safeguard any learner from the possibility of becoming radicalised and forming extremist views. We have safeguards in place, but will carry out sessions with you to identify the risks associated with radicalisation, extremism, forms of abuse, grooming and bullying, including highlighting the online dangers. We know that young people are often targets and are especially vulnerable to online radicalisation. For this reason, it is important for us to talk about Prevent.
British Values
British Values are defined in the Prevent Strategy as:
- Democracy
- Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect and Tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs
At MGTS:
- We encourage our learners to identify ways in which they can demonstrate how British Values play a part in our daily lives and why they are important values.
- We influence decision-making through a democratic process.
- We have a Learner Voice committee, voted for by you, who attend meetings to represent all learners.
- We ensure our learners understand that the freedom to practise other faiths and beliefs is protected in law. To accept that people, having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none), should be accepted and tolerated and should not be the cause of any prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
- We identify how the UK laws help to keep us safe in the workplace and within our communities.
- We develop learners’ understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination.
